Trump says he did not discuss Russian Federation probe with acting attorney general

President Trump said Friday he hasn't spoken to acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker about special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion with Russian Federation.

In a tweet Wednesday, shortly after Sessions' dismissal was announced, Toomey praised Sessions - who previously was one of his GOP Senate colleagues - and said he wants to see Trump nominate "a new Attorney General who is equally committed to the rule of law". He once opined about a situation in which Trump could fire Sessions and then appoint an acting attorney general who could stifle the funding of Mueller's probe.

Asked by ABC's Jon Karl about Whitaker's past criticisms of the Mueller investigation and calls for his recusal, Trump feigned ignorance.

Trump said it was up to Whitaker whether he would be involved in the investigation.

Mueller is investigating allegations of Russian meddling and collusion in the 2016 USA presidential election. I think he'll do a very good job. His spokesman said on Thursday that McConnell has no further comment on the legislation.

While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Conway explained President Trump is not planning to use the resignation as a way to shut down the Mueller probe.

Sources close to the matter told CBS News on Thursday that Christie, a one-time presidential candidate, is part of a list that includes former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, outgoing Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, and former Attorney General William Barr, who served under President George H.W. Bush, CBS reported.

"And to outsiders, it looks like he [Trump] chose this person because this person has committed to end this investigation, this person is loyal to Donald Trump". He has questioned the Russian Federation probe's scope and spoken publicly before joining the Justice Department about ways an attorney general could theoretically stymie the investigation. "Graham, I do believe we have the right to get a solid answer from him", she said.

"I'd like them to protect the Mueller investigation".

Rally organizers are demanding that Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker immediately commit not to assume supervision of the investigation because he has publicly outlined strategies to stifle the investigation and can not be allowed to remain in charge of it.

Senator Ron Wyden speaks at an anti-Trump protest at the Portland waterfront Thursday evening. "At various opportunities, you have suggested cutting the special counsel's budget or limiting his authority to follow lines of inquiry". The move superseded the regular order of succession which would have placed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein the Acting AG role.
