California wildfire destroys homes, hospital; deaths reported

The Camp Fire rages through Paradise, Calif., on Thursday.

Almost 30,000 people were forced to evacuate on Thursday when a wildfire roared through this California town, located about 180 miles northeast of San Francisco.

A red flag warning is Cal Fire's most serious caution.

"Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed, it's that kind of devastation", said Cal Fire Capt. Scott McLean late Thursday.

He estimated that several thousand structures were burned in the city, located about 180 miles northeast of San Francisco. An emergency evacuation order was issued for several neighborhoods west of Los Angeles as firefighters frantically fought back the Woolsey Fire.

BFD spokesperson Keith May said BFD is sending one engine to assist the City of Oakland as its fire department responds to a fire on Highway 13, just south of Joaquin Miller Road. So far, it has burned through 20,000 acres, injured firefighters and residents and prompted hospitals and schools to quickly evacuate.

Residents described fleeing their homes and getting stuck in traffic jams as the flames sparked explosions and toppled utility poles. After an hour of no movement, she abandoned the truck and chose to try her luck on foot.

Many abandoned their cars on the side of the road, fleeing on foot.

Resident Shari Bernacett told the Associated Press she "knocked on doors, yelled and screamed" to get mobile home residents in her area to leave as fire consumed the hillside.

"It's the black of night at 9 a.m.", McClean said.

About two-thirds of the city of Malibu was ordered evacuated early Friday as a ferocious Southern California's wildfire roared toward the beachside community that is home for many Hollywood celebrities.

Rescuers used a bulldozer to push abandoned cars out of the way in order to reach a hospital and evacuate patients as the fire engulfed the building, Butte County Supervisor Doug Teeter said.

A second fire has been burning in the Santa Rosa Valley east of Camarillo, west of Simi Valley near Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks. Currently, about 15,000 structures are being threatened by the wildfire, fire officials told AP.
