SNL's Pete Davidson mocks Dan Crenshaw

SNL's Pete Davidson mocks Dan Crenshaw

Crenshaw served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he lost his right eye and severely damaged his left in the deadly Helmand province after encountering an improvised explosive device six years ago.

On Sunday, Crenshaw responded to the dig on Twitter saying: "Good rule in life: I try hard not to offend; I try harder not to be offended".

King later hit out at Davidson for his joke about Crenshaw, tweeting: 'Disgrace for SNL comedian Pete Davidson to mock GOP Dan Crenshaw for wearing eye patch'.

Over the weekend Pete Davidson made what many have felt to be an insensitive joke towards a wounded U.S. veteran running for office. According to Thompson, Davidson's follow-up comment about Crenshaw - "I know he lost his eye in war, or whatever", Davidson said on "Weekend Update" - may have been more about audience's reception to the joke.

Crenshaw wasn't the only politician that Davidson made fun of on Saturday night.

Crenshaw later told TMZ that he didn't necessarily want an apology. He said the "real atrocity" was Davidson's attempt at a joke, which he called "not funny" and "mean-spirited".

"I'm sorry - I know he lost his eye in war or whatever", he chuckled.

"After I had to move back in with my mom, I started paying attention to them", he said, likely alluding to his recent split from Ariana Grande.

'I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world, ' he added.

"I think what him and maybe the producers at SNL should do is pool their money together, let's throw a figure out there - a million dollars - and we will donate that to a series of veterans non-profits that helps veterans", Crenshaw said, listing off several organizations. We don't need to be outwardly outraged.

"If "SNL" wants to be in the game where you make fun of wounded veterans, that is a hill they can die on alone", added McCain.

"He said that's how he deals with it, and that's fine if he finds catharsis in comedy, which a lot of people do, but that doesn't give him the right to take shots at someone else's service and people's physical pain", McCain said.
