Rooney set to represent England... for one game only

Gareth Southgate has agreed to allow Rooney a "farewell" one-off appearance to earn his 120th cap for England.

In the same summer that Ronaldo sealed a £100m switch to Juventus, Rooney signalled the final throes of his career by joining Major League Soccer side DC United.

"It's been two years since Wayne last played, England are on a new threshold and have just had a great World Cup but are going backwards with this".

Wayne Rooney will put on an England shirt again for the final time in a friendly against the United States at Wembley on November 15th.

Wayne Rooney is expected to join up with the England squad on Monday ahead of his shock worldwide return.

There is a strong charity element to Rooney's inclusion as it is hoped it will help raise around £500,000 for the Wayne Rooney Foundation, which helps various charities including the NSPCC.

He will not be a part of England's squad for a Nations League clash against Croatia at Wembley three days after the United States game.

"But England play Croatia in the Nations League three days after this U.S. match, so turning it into a testimonial means Gareth's players will not be preparing properly for the important game which follows it", Shearer added.

"I spent a lot of time with him with England, getting to know him, and he's a lovely man".

"You would think Gareth Southgate would need this match to prepare for the future, but clearly not".

Unfortunately, the fairytale ended this week as Rooney missed a penalty in a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to the Columbus Crew.

"The connection between the FA and former England players is something that has always been very important to me", Southgate said. We're fortunate that circumstances have allowed us to formally acknowledge Wayne's huge contribution to England in front of the Wembley crowd and against apt opponents given the recent impact he has made in MLS.

The Wayne Rooney Foundation focuses on improving the lives of disadvantaged children.
