Two Saudi sisters found dead, tied together in NY

Police in NY searched yesterday for clues to what, or who, killed two sisters whose bodies were found duct-taped together on the banks of the Hudson River in Manhattan.

Sisters Tala Farea, 16, and Rotana Farea, 22, were found dead in New York's Hudson River.

The sources say the mother told police that the sisters disappeared after the entire family, which also includes two brothers, was ordered back to Saudi Arabia.

The bodies of two women were found washed up from the Hudson River off the Upper West Side in New York, Oct. 24, 2018.

Interviews with family members and others have begun to shed light on "what was going on in the two young ladies' lives", he said.

The girls' movements before their death are not yet clear but police said they had moved to the USA with their mother in 2015, settling in Fairfax, more than 200 miles from where their bodies were found on 24 October.

Investigators are still mystified by how and why Rotana, 22, and Tala, 16, made their way to NY from their adopted Virginia home, as well as whether their demise was a freakish suicide pact or something more sinister.

Detective Shea told a media conference that investigators were working to resolve "gaps" in the sisters' history. A spokeswoman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner did not return messages Sunday seeking information.

"We've made significant progress in piecing together the pieces of this puzzle to find out what happened", said Shea at an unrelated press briefing.

There were no obvious signs of trauma to their bodies, police have said.

Fairfax police confirmed to DailyMail.com that at least one Farea sister was reported missing by family.

A post on the centre's website - which appears to have been taken down - had noted that Tala might have been with Rotana.

In December 2017, police said the sisters were placed in a shelter after an earlier disappearance in 2017.

DailyMail.com has learned Rotana, from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was an undergraduate at George Mason University from January 2016 until May of this year.

They were reported missing again on August 24 this year. A George Mason spokesman called the news of her death "tragic", and said the university was cooperating with police.

The Consulate General is following closely with local authorities the investigation of the two Saudi citizens found in the Hudson river.
