Demaryius Thomas Trade to Houston Opens Big Opportunity for Courtland Sutton

The Patriots didn't land Demaryius Thomas, as the Broncos wide receiver was traded to the Texans on Tuesday, but that doesn't mean they weren't interested.

As part of the deal, Denver is getting back a fourth-round pick and is swapping seventh-round picks with the Texans (the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport first reported the deal). That is even with the Texans being on a five-game winning streak and trading for Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.

One of the primary reasons that Denver was willing to trade Thomas, who has been with the organization since being drafted in 2010, is because it opens the door for more playing time for Courtland Sutton.

In a conference call with Denver media on Tuesday, Texans coach Bill O'Brien said he knew nothing of the trade talks for Thomas, saying, "I've been in meetings all day game planning". He has recorded at least 75 receptions and 900 receiving yards in six straight seasons, which is the longest active streak in the National Football League, and has played in 115 consecutive regular season games, which is the longest active streak among all National Football League wide receivers.

The Eagles announced they had acquired Golden Tate from the Detroit Lions, reportedly for a third-round pick, shortly after the Thomas news broke.

Thomas had one year left on his current contract, but his future with the Broncos after this season was decidedly uncertain because he was set to count $17.533 million against the salary cap next season. He also missed the first three games of the 2017 season with a broken collarbone. But by moving Thomas, at the very least you'll free up roster space for younger players, he said.
