New MacBook Air (2018) Hands-On

"It [the MacBook Air] redefined the notebook in the process ... and became the most beloved notebook ever", Apple CEO Tim Cook said on Tuesday at a company event in Brooklyn. It is also marginally lighter than the previous model. SD card is gone, much to my chagrin, but the 3.5mm headphone jack remains, and there are two USB-C / TB-3 ports on the left side.

That most recent previous model started at $999 for a 13-inch machine, and $1,199 for a 15-inch.

Finally acknowledging design deficiencies this year, Apple said it redesigned the scissors mechanism for what it calls a "third generation" keyboard. The new MacBook Air weighs only 2.75 pounds.

It costs $799 in the US.

Pricing starts at US$1199 with a 1.6 GHz dual-core i5 processor, 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB SSD. Aluminium gives strength and durability to the new Mackbook Air, which is made from 100% recycled aluminium. It will most likely be added to all future MacBooks though to add an unprecedented level of security. To maintain the security of the device, the device will come with the T2 security chip which also controls the SSD of the device.

The new MacBook Air comes in space gray, silver, and a new gold that's still kind of roses.

In a way, the new MacBook Air sounds like the ideal laptop ever created.

The new MacBook Air represents the first significant overhaul that the MacBook Air has received since it was first introduced as "the world's thinnest notebook" in 2008. Talking about the battery, Apple claims that the device will come with a similar 12-hour battery life. Orders are open now, and Apple expects to begin shipping the new machines starting November 7.

In addition, the massive aluminum bezel around the 13.3-inch Retina Display has also been removed; instead, the display glass extends from edge-to-edge and the bezels are now much smaller (50 percent smaller, in fact). Other new features include Touch ID and Apple's proprietary T2 security chip, which manages the fingerprints stored on the laptop.

Thunderbolt 3 is the same shape as USB-C and includes the complete USB-C spec, so it can connect to all manner of devices - including the charger.

However, just like with other Mac models, the MacBook Air can be configured further on Apple's website.

But a second model of the product climbs to £1,399 and features the same internals but packs 256GB of memory. Those perforations aren't just for show, either; they house speakers that are 25% louder and deliver two-times the amount of bass than that of the previous MacBook Air, according to Apple. Apple's 12 hours of wireless web browsing (or 13 hours of iTunes movie playback) is on a par with before, too, though it still insists on only including a 30W power adapter.

The higher resolution display is easily the biggest upgrade the 2018 MacBook Air has seen.
