Gales and heavy rain to end the week

Met Éireann has issued Status Orange weather warnings for 13 counties, with high winds coinciding with high spring tides tomorrow evening.

Weather warnings have been put in place from 6am on Friday across western parts of the United Kingdom, as torrential rains and heavy winds are set to strike the country.

This warning is in place from 11pm on Thursday until 9am on Friday morning.

Storm Callum is set to hit the United Kingdom later this week, bringing heavy rain and gale-force winds up to 80mph, as the Met Office says there is a danger to life.

Strong winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour are forecast, while winds of up to 110 kilometres per hour are being forecast for inland counties.

The Met Office has issued a number of weather warnings for the unsettled conditions that impact large parts of the country.

According to the Met Office, gusts of 50 miles per hour are likely with potential for gusts of 60 miles per hour around exposed coasts and hills.

The Met Office has warned that homes and offices are likely to be flooded, and fast flowing or deep floodwater could cause a danger to life.

Winds of up to 130km are expected, possibly going even higher in coastal areas. "In addition, leaves and twigs, brought down by the wind, could block drains and culverts, increasing the likelihood of flooding".

Train services between Swansea and Carmarthen are being suspended during parts of Friday because of Storm Callum. There are also risks of coastal flooding, and the warning is in place from 10pm Thursday until 12pm Friday. "Road users should also be aware of the risk of their vehicles aquaplaning on standing water".

Wales and the North West could have the heaviest deluge.

There will be rough seas and large waves, making coastal areas risky. There is the potential for flooding in these areas.

The forecaster's Atlantic rain charts reveal that Friday's storm will be followed by some heavy rain on Saturday with the next belt following early next week.
