Iowa State holds vigil for slain golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena

The anguished mother of slain college golfer Celia Barquín Arozamena paid tribute to her daughter in Spain as hundreds gathered at Iowa State University to weep over their fallen fellow student.

In April, she became the second women's golfer at Iowa State to earn medalist honors at a conference tournament when claiming the 2018 Big 12 Championship with a three-shot victory.

Police in Ames subsequently detained a 22-year-old man, named as Collin Daniel Richards, who has been charged with first-degree murder after the discovery of Barquín's body last Monday morning.

Police found Richards at a homeless camp.

"She had been stabbed in the upper torso, head and neck", Huff said, adding that the attack had happened in "broad daylight", sometime between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

Born in Puente San Miguel, Spain, Barquín was completing a degree in civil engineering and was described by Iowa State director of athletics Jamie Pollard as "a spectacular student-athlete and ISU ambassador".

Arozamena was going to be on the field at halftime of Saturday's game to be honored as Iowa State's female athlete of the year. She'd also earned an invitation to the 2019 Women's British Open because of her victory at the European Ladies' Amateur Championship in July.

Police have said the suspect told an acquaintance he wanted to rape and kill someone. He said police have had "past encounters" with Richards but that he did not know details, or any information about Richards' criminal record.

Barquin's former team announced Tuesday it was pulling out of the East & West Match Play in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to grieve their loss. Officers then discovered the body "some distance away" from the bag, and they later determined that she was assaulted and later died. In one case, the Iowa State Patrol seized a long knife from him during a traffic stop.

Several speakers, including women's golf coach Christie Martens, talked about the star golfer from Spain. In another, he threatened to return to a convenience store to shoot clerks after they caught him shoplifting.
