Lawyer: Ford can testify next week if terms fair

The woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were teens says she is willing to testify about the incident if a number of terms are met.

Debra Katz, one of Ford's attorneys, said in Thursday's email that she wanted to set up a call later that day to discuss conditions for Ford's testimony. She contends Kavanaugh, then 17 and "stumbling drunk", pinned her to a bed and groped her, leaving her fearful for her life before she escaped. No decisions were reached, the aide said. Christine Blasey Ford was a student at the Holton Arms School, a Maryland all-girls school, in the early 1980s.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh's future on the U.S. Supreme Court is in flux after an allegation of physical and sexual assault. But Ford's accusation has upended his confirmation process.

"Let it play out", Trump said. Panel chairman Chuck Grassley and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have said Monday would be her chance to testify.

Kavanaugh's nomination to the supreme court had looked nearly certain to be confirmed until Blasey Ford came forward at the weekend. "He remains committed to providing a fair forum for both Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh".

According to reports Thursday, the Republicans are considering hiring a female outside litigator to handle the questioning, which would be televised nationally.

If Ford opts not to participate, Republicans could well dispense with the hearing to avoid giving Democrats a forum for peppering Kavanaugh with embarrassing questions. "That's an option that the committee has given her".

Kavanaugh, who's been eager to testify, said he was ready to appear Monday.

"No one should make light of this situation", wrote Flake, who is retiring from the Senate at the end of his term.

"I just want to say to the men in this country: Just shut up and step up".

Blasey claimed Kavanaugh covered her mouth when she tried to scream.

"Since the moment I first heard this allegation, I have categorically and unequivocally denied it", the Supreme Court nominee wrote. Democrats hope to win at least two new seats to regain control of the Senate. Vice President Mike Pence would break a tie. Susan Collins, a key Republican swing vote.

On Wednesday, Republicans, who have rebuffed Ford's request for Federal Bureau of Investigation intervention, urged Ford to accept their invitation to testify and signaled they'd forge ahead with Kavanaugh's confirmation.

Committee Republicans have held firm in recent days that Blasey Ford must testify on Monday, either in public or in private before the committee or committee staffers.

Third, as long as Ford's counsel want to talk about regular, independent investigations, we should note that there is not a police organization in America that would entertain her allegation, in light of the lapse of time and the long-ago exhaustion of the statute of limitations.

Also in the email, Katz reiterates Ford's "strong preference" for a "full investigation" to occur before she testifies. But that wording fell short of a nonnegotiable demand.

A senior White House official said Kavanaugh and his wife also have received threats. Trump refrained from tweeting about his nominee.

Some Republicans have suggested Ford's accusation against Kavanaugh could be a case of mistaken identity.
