Delta Fire And I-5 Closure Bring Trucking To Near Standstill

-A roaring wildfire that has shut down a stretch of a major interstate in a rural area near the California-Oregon border has almost doubled in size overnight.

Google Maps continues to update the California fire map with information about fires to which the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) is responding, along with information about evacuations and road closures.

TRINITY COUNTY, Calif. - In the latest update from the State-Trinity National Forest Service as of 10 a.m. on September 6, Northbound Interstate 5 is closed at the Fawndale exit approximately 10 miles north of Redding.

Flames from the Delta Fire near an Interstate 5 exit on Saturday.

The blaze had devoured 63.9 square miles (165½ square kilometers) and was only 5 percent contained.

Patience was running thin at the Pilot Travel Center in the town of Weed, near the northern end of the closure.

The Mendocino Complex fire burned over 459,000 acres and is the largest wildfire in the modern California history.

"They had a lot of ground troops- they just didn't have many people to manage them, so our people were in charge of crews", he said.

California Highway Patrol Officer Jason Morton said the blaze is 0% contained and still burning along Interstate 5.

California has been hit with one massive blaze after another over the summer, including a blaze not far from the Delta Fire that last month burned about 1,100 homes and killed eight people.

Trucking companies expect snowstorms in winter to interrupt the flow between California and OR, but a wildfire shutting down Interstate 5 for days wasn't something shippers OR their customers were expecting before Wednesday's Delta fire broke out between Dunsmuir and Shasta Lake.
