Local officials keep eye on Tropical Storm Florence

It is important to note that significant impacts are possible well away from the center of the storm, and that the track error can be quite large at day 5 and beyond. Interests near and along the U.S. East Coast should monitor the progress of Florence through the weekend and ensure they have their hurricane plans in place.

The storm is entirely unlikely to hit oil production or delivery terminals but it may have economic impacts.

A map showing the the potential track area of Tropical Storm Florence, which shifted to the south and was expected to regain strength to become a major hurricane as of 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2018. That gives us some time to do our hurricane preps now.

Some hurricane models indicate Hurricane Florence, the first major hurricane of the 2018 season, could pose a threat to the eastern United States coastline, including SC.

"Florence may begin to move faster toward the west-northwest over the western Atlantic early next week", the National Hurricane Center advised.

"It is still too early to determine impacts (if any) to the Eastern Seaboard".

About 70 percent of the 70 simulations from the American (blue lines in the graphic below) and European (red lines in the graphic below) modeling systems predict the storm to make landfall along the East Coast. The biggest issue facing forecasters is the uncertainty of the path, but a direct hit of the U.S. East Coast is looking increasingly probable.

"Regardless of Florence's eventual track, large swells will begin to affect Bermuda later today and portions of the U.S. East Coast this weekend, resulting in life-threatening surf and rip currents", a message from the National Weather Service read.

The next name up in the storm rotation is Isaac.

But increasing wind shear off the Atlantic interfered with the storm building, weakening the beast to a tropical storm with 65mph winds on Friday.

Hurricane Florence has the potential to make landfall on the East Coast but it is still too early to tell. Since Florence is now a tropical storm, it is maintaining a more southerly and westerly track than thought.
