Ex-Trump campaign adviser sentenced to 14 days in prison

Papadopoulos has cooperated for more than a year with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

His case was also the first to detail a member of the Trump campaign having knowledge of Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election while it was ongoing. Papdopoulos had allegedly been communicating with a professor and with ties to the Russian government who told him that Russia had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton, including those stolen emails.

Outside court on Friday, Papadopoulos' lawyer, Thomas Breen, said his client was a "fool" and had acted "stupidly" in lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

When Papadopoulos pleaded guilty previous year, he pledged to help the special counsel's office with its investigation.

In addition to the two weeks' jail term, Papadopoulos was given a year of probation and ordered to serve 200 hours of community service and fined $9,500.

Former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos exits U.S. District Court after his sentencing hearing in Washington on September 7, 2018.

They said Papadopoulos's initial lies hindered investigators' ability to effectively question, challenge or detain Joseph Mifsud, the London professor who had contacted him.

"We are very satisfied with the sentence", Papadopoulos's lawyer, Thomas Breen, told reporters after the hearing.

"As far as I remember, I absolutely did not share this information with anyone on the campaign", Papadopoulos told Tapper.

The charges he pleaded guilty to carry a maximum sentence of up to 5 years in prison, but prosecutors had recommended just 6 months, citing his extensive cooperation.

He was the first ex-Trump aide arrested in the probe into an alleged Kremlin plot to sway the 2016 USA vote. "I think the judge really took everything into consideration".

Former Donald Trump presidential campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, right, was sentenced to 14 days in prison Friday. He had discussed with those foreigners the possibility of a foreign trip where Donald Trump could meet Vladimir Putin.

A pre-sentencing statement last week read: "While some in the room rebuffed George's offer, Mr Trump nodded with approval and deferred to Mr Sessions, who appeared to like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it".

Michael Flynn, a former national security adviser to Trump who was also a close campaign aide, pleaded guilty in December to lying to FBI agents about his contacts with Russian Federation and agreed to cooperate with Mueller's investigation.

They wrote in a sentencing memo: "Mr Papadopoulos's motives for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation were wrongheaded indeed, but far from the sinister spin the government suggests".

Papadopoulos was the key to discovering that, the government says.

"We don't talk politics", he said.

Van der Zwaan, a Dutch lawyer who worked with Manafort and Gates, was also convicted of lying to prosecutors.
