13 hurt and two missing as boats collide head-on in California

The Tulare County Sheriff's Office confirmed Monday that a woman who died when two boats crashed on the Colorado River was Chrisi Lewis, the step-daughter of former Sheriff Bill Wittman.

All those aboard both boats were thrown into the water and both boats sank, the sheriff's department said in its statement, adding that some people were rescued from the water by passing boaters.

Crews found the remains of Kirra Drury, 24, from Ventura, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said.

Mortensen says Lewis was a California resident, but her hometown hasn't been determined.

"These efforts will continue until all of those who are missing and unaccounted for have been located", Shuster told reporters on Sunday.

The others aboard the boats were not seriously injured and did not need to go to a hospital, authorities said. Nine others were hospitalized with less serious injuries.

Furthermore, Sheriff Doug Schuster said that none of the boaters were wearing life vests, which are not required by law.

The Hallet boat with 10 people aboard was northbound and a Sleek Craft boat, occupied by six people, was southbound when they collided head on.

The recreational boats crashed Saturday in Moabi Regional Park as darkness was falling on a rushing river crowded with holiday weekend boaters, making the rescue operation hard.

As of 9:00 pm, multiple agencies are continuing to search for two missing occupants.

Other passengers are believed to have jumped into the water and been carried down river.

The second boat was badly damaged, but remained afloat.

Helicopters have been deployed, and authorities have scoured the shoreline to try to find them. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office also stated that divers were in the area to conduct a search and warned boaters in the area to do so with caution.
