Former senator Jon Kyl steps in to fill McCain's Arizona Senate seat

If Kyl does not serve after the end of the current congressional term on January 3, 2019, Arizona's governor can appoint another senator for the remaining year.

That vote could be crucial for Republicans hoping to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. "There is no one in Arizona with the stature of senator Jon Kyl".

Kyl, 76, served with McCain during his 18 years in the U.S. Senate, rising to minority whip, the second-highest-ranking Republican senator in the chamber.

Petraeus said McCain was a man of "great courage, unshakable determination, and unwavering devotion to our country and those who defend it", according to remarks released by the family.

Rarely has a runner-up for the US Presidency been accorded the kind of final farewell given to the late Senator John McCain on Saturday (September 1) at the Washington National Cathedral. Trump, wearing a white "Make America Great Again" hat, and having tweeted his morning complement of bile, directed at Hillary Clinton, Robert Mueller, and his own Justice Department, had departed to play golf. National Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan was among Canadian officials who attended John McCain's funeral in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, and he called the senator a "friend to Canada".

The fact that Trump finally relented and agreed to appropriately honor McCain only amid public pressure indicates that he is still very much taking to heart the latter's past criticism against him. "It's a great tribute to John that he is prepared to go back into public service to help the state of Arizona", she wrote.

McCain died on August 25 at his home in Sedona, Arizona, following a year-long battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

McCain's experiences in Vietnam would greatly alter the person he became upon his return, and his career in politics reflected that change. The inclusion of two former presidents to lead the eulogy was as significant as the exclusion of the current US President Donald Trump - a calibrated decision taken by the resolute John McCain during the last stages of his unsuccessful but courageous grapple with cancer.

If that scenario really happens, one can probably expect even more volatility and confrontation not only in USA politics, but also in global diplomacy in the coming days as well. "I do know I will not seek this seat in 2020, nor any other office in the future". Before being elected to the Senate, Kyl served four terms in the House, representing Arizona's District 4. "Sen. Kyl is a beacon of integrity".
