In recent years, China-Africa people-to-people exchanges have grown, but still lag behind economic and trade cooperation, said Liu Hongwu, director of the Institute of African Studies at China's Zhejiang Normal University.

An all-day round table meeting for Chinese and African leaders to be chaired by President Xi Jinping and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is the African co-chair of the Forum, will be convened on September 4.

International Relations Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has attributed China's current global status to "meticulous planning, ingenuity and hard work".

Jiang said China-Africa cooperation on industrialization, trade, and infrastructure will be the major topic during the meeting.

It is the most significant contributor to high debt risks in three African countries, Congo Republic, Djibouti, and Zambia, CARI said this week.

Meanwhile, the exiled leader of the opposition in the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has said China's actions in the Indian Ocean archipelago amounted to a "land grab" and "colonialism", with 80 percent of its debt held by Beijing.

While Senators Abdullahi Adamu, George Akume, Godswill Akpabio and Aliyu Wamakko representing Nasarawa, Benue, Akwa Ibom and Sokoto states joined the president on the trip. "Resources for our cooperation are not to be spent on any vanity projects, but in places where they count the most".

Djibouti has become heavily dependent on Chinese financing after China opened its first overseas military base in the Horn of Africa country a year ago, a powerful signal of the continent's strategic importance to Beijing.

On arrival at Capital International Airport, Beijing at about 9:04 am (Nigerian time), Buhari was received by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Zhou Pingjian, Nigeria's Ambassador to China, Baba Ahmed Jidda and his wife Zahra; the Deputy Chief of Mission, Ambassador Bakori Aliyu Usman; Consular-General of Nigeria, Guangzhou, Shairudeen Oloko; Consular-General of Nigeria, Shanghai, Anderson Madubuike; and Defence Attaché, Brig-Gen.

President Museveni on arrival held bilateral talks with his Kenyan counterpart, Mr Uhuru Kenyatta, on issues of mutual interest between the two countries.

"Industrialisation is the prerequisite and key point for African countries to create jobs, reduce poverty and improve livelihoods, and then achieve inclusive and sustainable development", Jiang said, adding that Chinese investment will help the continent to upgrade its industry and bolster endogenous growth capacity. The last decade has seen a boom in African Eurobond issuance.

The summit, scheduled for September 3-4, aims to build a closer China-Africa community with a shared future, further dovetail China's Belt and Road Initiative with African development, set a new path for a higher level of China-Africa cooperation, and deepen people-to-people exchanges.

Agenda four is playing the melody that connects the people of China and Africa as close as a family.

China has passed Europe and the United States as the biggest trading partner of most African countries.

Besides energy, Zimbabwe and China are cooperating in various other sectors.
