Still, he acknowledged his rocky relationship with the respected senator, which included McCain criticizing Trump's rhetoric during the 2016 presidential campaign and came to a climax when McCain voted down the Trump administration's attempt at repealing Obamacare.

McCain "served his country honorably", Pence said, adding that President Donald Trump "respected his service to the country".

Following that, bipartisan leaders - McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Ryan and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi - presented wreaths.

Senator John McCain was remembered as a "true American hero" and a awful driver with a wicked sense of humour at a crowded church service that ended with the playing of Frank Sinatra's My Way.

"At any moment, he might be preparing an eloquent reflection on human liberty or a devastating joke, served up with his signature cackle and that John McCain glint in his eye", he said.

McCain's close friend, Sen.

"I feel like Meghan McCain is trying to set Pence on fire with her mind", said Kaore Bonell.

The late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has returned to the U.S. Capitol one last time on Friday to lie in state in the rotunda, where only 30 other people have lain since the practice began in 1852.

As the service ended, thousands of people were guided into snaking lines along First Street on the border of the Capitol complex to pay respects to McCain.

A memorial service was held on Thursday at the North Phoenix Baptist Church, where former Vice President Joes Biden and others gave tributes to Mr McCain. Only a handful of Americans have lain in state or honor at the U.S. Capitol since the rotunda was completed in 1824.

"We have this lovely thing, the chance to do for this man, what he did for us", Ryan said.

"My reaction to Vietnam was through the lens of where John McCain was for five years", he said, describing how he became physically sick after the visit and thinking about what it was like to be held captive in that environment.

The funeral services were planned in advance by McCain, who made clear the United States president was not welcome, in what was seen as a final rebuke to Trump.

Friday's events in the Capitol will feature remarks by fellow Republicans Vice President Mike Pence, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, honoring McCain's 35-year career in Congress.

Trump and his wife, Melania, danced to the same song at the new president's inauguration in 2017.

McCain is scheduled to lie in state the U.S. Capitol on Friday before a memorial service Saturday at the Washington National Cathedral, where former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama are scheduled to deliver eulogies.

McCain "was a patriot and was in service to our country his entire life".

At the end of the almost 90-minute ceremony, McCain's casket was wheeled out of the church to "My Way", in tribute to a politician known for following his own path.

Mr McCain will be laid to rest in a private ceremony on Sunday at the US Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland, according to McCain's office.

After the ceremony, McCain's family and those in attendance filed past the coffin, which sat atop a pine board catafalque originally built in 1865 for President Abraham Lincoln's casket.
