Depardieu accused of rape by young actress at mansion

French actor Gérard Depardieu has been accused of rape by a 22-year-old actress.

The report questions why the unnamed accuser filed charges several weeks after the alleged August 7 and August 13 incidents when she had visited one of Depardieu's Paris homes.

Paris public prosecutor's office has opened a preliminary inquiry into allegations against Depardieu after a complaint. The Hollywood Reporter quotes a Holland-based news agency, reporting that the woman claims she was raped on two separate occasions by Depardieu, who was reportedly giving her "professional advice".

One of France's biggest film stars, Depardieu has been in more than 170 movies.

The young woman was studying at a school where Depardieu is teaching, according to BFM. "The case was passed on to the Paris prosecutor", the source told Reuters.

The Russian reaction to the allegations against Depardieu echo the country's responses to the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment charges.

"I regret the public nature of this process which poses a major prejudice to Gerard Depardieu, whose innocence I am convinced will be recognised", his lawyer Temime added, calling for restraint on all sides. He won a Golden Globe for his performance in "Green Card", a 1990 English-language romantic comedy co-starring Andie MacDowell.

In 2014, he had the leading role in "Welcome to NY", the film inspired by from the life of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former director of the International Monetary Fund who was accused in 2011 of sexually assaulting a hotel maid.

Former Internation Monetary Fund boss Strauss-Kahn resigned in 2011 following allegations of sexual assault.

Depardieu stars in Netflix's French series "Marseille".
