However, despite the new season looming there is hope for the Red Devils yet; if United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is willing to open up the chequebook and Mourinho can sign several of these players, Man Utd may finally return to former glories.

Reports reaching home from the U.S. tour depict players too nervous to talk openly about what they think, with the Daily Telegraph and The Sun claiming those in the squad feel they are "treading on eggshells".

He also recently had a rant about the quality of some of United's youth players who were part of the club's pre-season tour of the USA while a few of the club's first team stars are still on holiday.

ZZ heads the list of high- profile bosses available - just like Mourinho did during Dutchman Louis van Gaal's final season at United.

The forward's debut season at Old Trafford under Van Gaal saw him feature in 31 Premier League games, making 29 starts and scoring 11 goals.

"I agree that when the season starts the transfer window closes", said Mourinho.

"As I was saying to the players, some of my players will be in an incredible condition", he said.

"We were just trying to survive and have the best possible results, but as I was saying to the players, some of my players will be in an unbelievable condition". Now we have Real Madrid and after that we have Bayern Munich and that is our start. The other things, they are too far from my hands.
