Shark returned to San Antonio aquarium after video shows brazen theft

The thieves, two men and a woman, took the 1.5ft (4.5m) horn shark from an open tank at the aquarium around 15:00.

Police say they were able to use the license plate of the truck driven from the scene to locate one of the suspects.

"When we got into the garage and into the house it looked like nearly a mock up of [the San Antonio Aquarium]", Leon Valley police chief Joseph Salvaggio was quoted as saying.

This photo shows three suspects believed to have stolen a horn shark from the San Antonio Aquarium in Texas.

Salvaggio said the men confessed to the shark snatching, and investigators planned to talk with the woman Tuesday. Then they stole a bucket from a filtration room and used that to smuggle the shark out of the aquarium.

"We sure hope it does, but being outside of that environment that it's made to be in - the warm water, the salt water - there's a good chance it won't make it", he said.

It is also expected two other people will be charged by authorities.

Salvaggio said he's not sure the shark will make it through the ordeal.

The female shark, named Helen, thankfully survived and was brought back to the aquarium.

An employee witnessed these freakish antics and immediately told aquarium managers.

On Monday police reportedly confirmed that one person was in custody and that the shark was alive.

Spellman went out to the parking lot to confront the group about the shark theft.

The suspects are facing charges for theft between $750 and $2,000.

The aquarium's assistant husbandry director, Jamie Shank, accompanied police on the trip to the suspect's house, where she removed the horn shark from a large tank to identify and inspect it. She said she told him she had seen water leaking from the baby stroller.
