Colombian Mafia Puts $70,000 Bounty On Sniffer Dog

The Urabeños mafia has put a bounty of 200 million pesos ($70,000) on her head, according to Colombian police, so the dog had to be moved to Bogota's El Dorado airport over fears for her safety.

Sombra is a 6-year-old German shepherd who has been on Colombia's counter-narcotics police force since she was a puppy.

Sombra has achieved celebrity status in Colombia, emerging as the hairy, friendly face of the nation's deadly war against drug cartels. Sombra or "Shadow" has sniffed out nearly 10 tons of drugs in more than 300 operations. The anti-narcotic police tweeted that "in the last three years she became a torment of 'Otoniel, '" an alias for Dairo Antonio Úsuga, the leader of the Urabeños. She also found another delivery of coke hidden inside a machine.

A police spokesperson told local media: 'Sombra is a huge headache for drug traffickers'.

In a bid to protect their precious drug-busting weapon, Colombian officials have transferred Sombra from the port city of Turbo, known to police as Urabenos' stronghold, to the capital city of Bogota, where she now works at the global airport. "So she has no problem with approaching kids or people who want to say hello to her". So even if they do get Sombra, there will just be another generation of drug sniffing dogs to take her place.

The criminal group, the most powerful in Colombia, has decided that the dog represented a threat to its business.

Colombia is one of the world's leading producers of cocaine, with an output of around 910 tonnes per year, according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

Sombra's detective work is needed now more than ever as Colombia wrestles with soaring coca production that is testing traditionally close relations with the United States.

Actually, add animals to the latter since a Colombian drug gang has reportedly put a bounty of $70,000 on a drug detecting canine.
