Vettel earns pole for F1 German GP

Lewis Hamilton had a terrible Qualifying round as his auto was retired after Q2, and he subsequently started 14th on the grid.

On the cool down lap at the end of the race, engineer Pete Bonnington called out: "Miracles do happen, mate", as the Briton responded "love conquers all".

Bottas and Raikkonen took advantage of this safety auto period to pit for tires, while Hamilton stayed out and inherited the lead.

The question was whether he had done so in an unsafe manner.

Wolff said the message did not mean Hamilton, who declared his German win from 14th on the grid as the greatest of his career, was seen as favoured ahead of Bottas as a clear number one driver.

"It's been the most emotional day". I kept the belief and it came true. Bottas attempted to challenge and pass Hamilton for the lead in Sunday's rain-hit race following a Safety Car period after Sebastian Vettel crashed while leading for Ferrari. My dad spent the little bit of money he could to shave it down and respray it and made it as brand-new as it could be. I just was open, said this is how it was.

'I was in the barrier and realised I don't get out, ' Vettel said. The rain came down and washed away the negativity. "We got the one-two back today". "By the time everything had calmed down we needed to have a good look at it and the stewards decided they should discuss it with the team".

Vettel's incident led to a safety auto coming out for several laps. But on Sunday, he did not put a foot wrong.

The FIA race director, Charlie Whiting, said that Ferrari had not issued a protest against Hamilton's actions and explained why it had taken so long. On lap 14, he passed the Haas vehicle of Kevin Magnussen for fifth, and then began his pursuit of catching the leading pack.

The four-time Formula One champion started from pole position and seemed in control.

The reprimand is Hamilton's first of the season, and the result is he keeps his victory and now leads Vettel by 17 points in the drivers' championship.

On lap 60, Hamilton posted a near-phenomenal lap in 1:15.7, nine-tenths quicker than Bottas.

Mercedes confirmed on Friday that Valtteri Bottas will continue as teammate to Lewis Hamilton for at least another year. They told him to pit, but at the last minute Hamilton veered left from the pit entry. "That proved to be the right call".

Hamilton appeared in front of the media shortly after his visit to the stewards. A real dream and one I will always remember.
