Microsoft Surface Go is available for pre-order

Microsoft detailed the compact design in a TechNet blog post. Each variant will be powered by a dual-core Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y processor. It comes from the same mindset as the original Surface, giving people an actual Windows 10 operating system that runs desktop apps (although it uses Windows 10 S Mode so you can only load apps from the Microsoft Store) and a price point that is entirely Gen Z-friendly, at $399. There's a headphone jack and a microSD card reader too. For commercial-channel buyers, you will have the option to have this device shipped with Windows 10 Pro.

Microsoft also unveiled an all-new Signature Type Cover specially designed for Surface Go. In the future, SKUs with 256GB SSDs, as well as LTE connectivity will be available, though pricing information is not yet available. It includes Microsoft's proprietary Surface Connect port, which is mostly used for charging but can also be used to plug it in to a docking station. At the back there's an 8MP rear-facing camera with autofocus. When revealing the tablet at a press briefing earlier this month, Microsoft product marketing manager Natalia Urbanowicz pulled the Surface Go out of a crossbody clutch from Knomo - showing how easy it would be for a busy mom to carry around a full laptop without lugging around a huge bag. The tablet features a 10-inch display and weighs in at just 1.2 pounds (0.54KG). It's also made much of the new device's ability to run full Office applications, a strong hint it feels that keyboard input is important to the device's success. The part doubtless helps to keep the Surface Go's price low, but won't deliver stellar performance.

On paper, Microsoft claims the battery life for the Surface Go is 10 hours, in line with the iPad, but this is again something that will need to be tested in the real world.

Again, the Surface Go doesn't come with a keyboard.

Finally, the Surface Book when paired with its Type cover gives a more hands-on approach for working when compared to a standalone iPad. The "Premium" $129 model, which is covered in Alcantara fabric (like the Surface Laptop) is known to discolor quickly with use. It's going to be a much better user experience. But the biggest difference is the price: the Surface Go starts at £380 in the United Kingdom and $399 in the USA, which is half the price of the cheapest Surface Pro tablet. Pre-orders for both devices begin today.

"Surface Go offers a stunning, custom-built high-resolution PixelSense Display that supports Surface Pen with 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity, low pen parallax, low latency, and precision for accurate note taking, drawing and computer-aided", says Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer, Microsoft.
