1 dead, many injured in a plane crash in South Africa

Their injuries range from minor to critical.

Photographs from the scene of the crash show the damaged aircraft in a field.

The plane came down on rough ground about five kilometres east of the airport, hitting a small factory building, injuring two people inside.

Police spokesman Isaac Mahamba told South African broadcaster eCNA: "There is smoke all over and paramedics are on the scene".

"There was one fatality in the cockpit, we are not sure if it's the pilot or the engineer".

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said that ER24 paramedics‚ along with several other services‚ were now on the scene treating and triaging the injured.

The plane, which had been expected at the Aviodrome, "crashed in South Africa during take-off on a test flight", it said.

Paramedic Xander Loubser from BestCare Ambulance Service said: "There are critical patients".

It said the Convair was a US-built passenger plane that could carry 44 people.

Civil Aviation Authority investigators were at the scene and started the process of determining the cause of the accident.

The plane had the words "Martin's Air Charter" painted on it, which was a previous name of Dutch cargo airline Martinair.

"ER24 paramedics, along with several other services, are now on the scene treating and triaging the patients", the emergency services group said in a statement on Tuesday.
