What We Learned From Ant-Man and the Wasp

The superhero film starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly nabbed an estimated $76 million in North America this weekend. That apparently includes their box offices too. However, before that's considered an issue, while Ultron only delivered a 2.4x multiplier, Homecoming delivered a 2.86x multiplier, the sixth best in the franchise, and the first Ant-Man enjoyed a healthy 3.15x multiplier.

That was enough to give it the top spot at the U.S. box office, and make it the studio's 20th straight number one opening.

For those who watched Ant-Man and The Wasp, the post-credits scene was one to stay and watch.

LOS ANGELES-Walt Disney Co.'s "Ant-Man and the Wasp" took a bite out of the box office over the weekend, premiering in first place with a healthy $76 million in the USA and Canada. In the last two years Marvel has released six films, and all of them have managed to make at least $850 million globally, with two of them making over $1 billion. Ant-Man and the Wasp's Friday gross accounted for 44.5% of its overall weekend gross, that's the largest in MCU history, ahead of Avengers: Age of Ultron (44.1%) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (43.39%). While under normal circumstances this number would be considered a win since it's up $18.8 million from the first Ant-Man's opening ($57.2 million), it is still below industry expectations for the first Marvel Studios film after the record-breaking Avengers: Infinity War. The latest MCU production also continued the trend in topping the box office during its opening weekend, a feat that every movie in the MCU has accomplished.

"We are really thrilled about the results", Cathleen Taff, Disney's head of domestic distribution, said.

Universal and Amblin Entertainment's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom recently charged past US$1 billion at the worldwide box office. Solo made just under $1 million domestically, bringing its domestic box office total to $211 million. The dinosaur blockbuster, which just crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, has earned $725 million from overseas alone.

Rounding out the top five were Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The First Purge, and Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which earned $28.5 million, $17.1 million, and $7.3 million, respectively. The documentary focusing on the life and career of Whitney Houston holds an A CinemaScore and a Rotten Tomatoes average of 90 percent. Boots Riley's film brought in $717,302 when it opened in 16 theaters. So far, Incredibles 2 has made $773 million at the worldwide box office.

Avengers: Infinity War dropped from twelfth place to fifteen place at the United States box office.
