U.S. service member killed in 'insider attack' in Afghanistan

But as NPR's David Welna reported last week, a "public information blackout" by the Trump administration has meant that, "since late previous year, the Pentagon's stopped posting those numbers for Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan".

The attack took place in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, a statement from the Nato-led Resolute Support mission said.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation did not release the identity of the American soldier killed or provide further details about the incident.

A United States service member has been killed and two others injured in what appears to be an insider attack in Afghanistan, Nato says.

"Cpl. Maciel was an excellent soldier beloved by his teammates and dedicated to our mission", Maciel's battalion commander, Lt. Col. David Conner, said in the 3rd Infantry Division statement. He had been serving in Afghanistan since February.

Maciel's task force was deployed in support of the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, a newly established unit that is focused on advising and bolstering local troops and is seen as critical to America's strategy in Afghanistan, the statement said.

As in other areas of the war, Afghan units suffer more heavily than coalition units from insider attacks.

However, details of the attack's location were not revealed, reports The Washington Post. The statement and an Afghan official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, said the attack occurred in Uruzgan province.

The last insider attack occurred in August 2017.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation did not release the identity of the American soldier killed or provide further details about where the incident took place.

The last insider attack that resulted in a USA casualty occurred in June previous year. He is survived by his mother and father.
