It would be his first overnight stay in the North.

Pompeo said he's looking to "fill in some details" on North Korea's commitment to denuclearize.

"The more you come, more trust we can build between one another", Kim Yong Chol, North Korea's former spy chief and Pompeo's primary interlocutor for nuclear negotiations, told the USA team at the top of their meeting while reporters were allowed in.

A television screen shows news reader Ri Chun Hee announcing the arrival of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to Singapore ahead of his meeting with U.S. president Donald Trump, during an evening bulletin in Pyongyang on June 11, 2018. He last visited in May ahead of the Trump-Kim summit and traveled there secretly in early April while he was director of the Central Intelligence Agency. "I expect that the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] is ready to do the same", Nauert said earlier.

Also high on the agenda is the issue of the remains of U.S. soldiers missing from the 1950-53 Korean War.

The meeting comes as North Korea is reportedly expanding a missile-manufacturing site.

News reports over the weekend cited U.S. intelligence sources as questioning the North's commitment to abandoning its nuclear arsenal.

He said relations between the USA and North Korea have "dramatically shifted" in North Korea's favor over the past few months.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who held highly-publicized summits with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in April and May, has described the peace efforts as crucial because Kim won't give up his nuclear weapons unless he feels his security is assured.

As it happens, Elton John also came up at Trump's campaign rally in Montana Thursday night. But North Korea declared its nuclear weapons program was "complete" on New Year's Day and did not require any more testing.
