Kirsten Gillibrand becomes first senator to call for abolishing ICE

In another tweet, Trump said: "To the great and courageous men and women of ICE, do not worry or lose your spirit".

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has a new acting director, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Saturday.

"The job they have is so risky", he said, warning that without ICE, people would be "afraid" to even leave their houses.

Democrats and immigrants have ramped up their protests of late - as the midterm elections approach - to push their immigration reform agenda.

Gillibrand called for an all-out elimination of ICE.

The issue comes after the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy, which referred all people who cross the border illegally for criminal prosecution on top of immigration proceedings.

"Do you think ICE should be abolished?". "We got to change the policy of this administration".

Homan also blasted Gillibrand a day earlier, when she made her statement calling for an end to ICE. It would have provided $25 billion in funding for a wall along the border, a Trump priority.

"I believe that it has become a deportation force, and I think you should separate the criminal justice from the immigration issues and I think you should re-imagine ice under a new agency with a very different mission and take those two missions out", Sen.

President Donald Trump has slammed the idea of abolishing ICE. "It's taken off. I think it's feeding this "abolish ICE" because they think ICE is doing bad things when the fact is we're doing what Congress told us to do".

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently stated, "The president often says a country without borders, is not a country". "Many jurisdictions continue to refuse to work with HSI because of a perceived linkage to the politics of civil immigration".

Vitiello now serves as acting deputy commissioner of the US Customs and Border Protection. The border enforcement agency is Customs and Border Protection, which sounds similar, but an easy way for the Senate Majority Leader to remember it when he gets confused is that they're the ones with "Border Protection" in their name.

They gathered on the front lawn of a Border Patrol station in McAllen, Texas, near a detention center where migrant children were being held in cages, and on a street corner near Trump's golf resort at Bedminster, New Jersey, where the president is spending the weekend.
