"Can you imagine if I said the things she said?" asked Trump, who has encouraged violence against protesters at his campaign rallies. Heitkamp showed off some moderate chops and sided with the White House on then-Supreme Court Justice nominee Neil Gorsuch.

Heitkamp's campaign confirmed to ABC News that the senator will not be in the state during President Trump's rally because the U.S. Senate is now in session.

In a later statement, Democratic-NPL Party faulted Cramer for the trade war and its impact on North Dakota agriculture, saying his actions "threaten the livelihood of North Dakota's farmers and ranchers".

President Donald Trump is set to campaign tonight in North Dakota for Rep. Kevin Cramer, the Republican challenging Democratic Sen.

"I hate it, I meet these people, they call it the elite", Trump said Wednesday night.

President Trump took the stage in North Dakota's largest city Wednesday evening to boost another Republican candidate, one day after three of his chosen candidates won GOP primaries or runoff elections.

Trump's popularity in the North Dakota is unquestionably strong. In a recent ad, Heitkamp boasted that she voted "over half the time" with Trump. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) in her home state Wednesday night, despite the two having a cordial past.

"We have to pick a great one". But Kennedy's decision to retire seemed to give him extra firepower, and he said he wanted to pick a jurist who could spend at least 40 years on the court. Heitkamp did vote to support Trump-appointed Justice Neil Gorsuch a year ago.

Cramer told The Associated Press that the hubbub was "more about the White House than me", but some Republicans believe it's time for Trump, who's enormously popular in North Dakota, to take on Heitkamp.

Trump also warned that if ICE were eliminated, the country would be "overrun with the worst criminal elements you have ever seen".

She said she and Trump had "a solid discussion about the Supreme Court vacancy".

Cramer thanked Trump "for not forgetting us" and said he'll always be with "them and with you".

The president was in full-on campaign mode during the event, begging Democrats to "please please" keep Nancy Pelosi as their leader and constantly invoking Maxine Waters as the new face of the party.

Mike Murphy, a GOP strategist, said having a Supreme Court retirement and confirmation in a midterm election year will make a "red-hot" election year even hotter - especially because a fifth consistently liberal justice could bring hot-button issues like abortion and gay rights onto the court's docket.

Heitkamp says she's curious how Trump will portray her record, which she says has favored many issues the president cares about, like environmental and banking regulations.
