Toys ‘R’ Us writes heartwarming goodbye as it closes for good

A heartbreaking photo of Geoffrey is circulating, as Toys "R" Us closes its remaining stores on Friday. As kids, just the thought of visiting Toys R Us gave us a lot of excitement. The photo shows Geoffrey The Giraffe saying goodbye in an empty Toys "R" Us store, with a suitcase in hand.

The toy store chain announced in March they would be closing down and the few remaining stores are closing for good this week. The image has been shared more than 300,000 times and has left many online feeling nostalgic and heartbroken.

Toys R Us posted a touching final message on its last day of business.

- Well, it's the day we all knew was coming. and now it's here.

"Throughout the retail reporting cycle, we've heard from a number of large and mid-sized retail chains that they expect to step in to compete in toys in a more meaningful way post-TRU", Stephanie Wissink, a retail analyst at Jefferies Financial Group, said in a recent note to clients.

And the people of the internet are endlessly sad about it, with many taking to Twitter to reveal their heartbreak. "I was surrounded by children". You'll be missed Geoffrey the Giraffe'.

"I'm never going to have a job like Toys R Us", said long-time employee Patty Van Fossan, 54, from Boardroom, Ohio, who was among a group of workers at protests in NY, fighting for severance that they believe they are owed.

By the fall of 2017 the company, saddled with $5billion in debt, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but pledged to stay open.
