Harry Kane Overtakes Ronaldo, Lukaku In Race For World Cup Golden Boot

Harry Kane played a captain's role once more with a hat-trick to become the tournament's leading scorer. The last Englishman to achieve this feat was the Legendary Gary Lineker in the year 1986.

The Three Lions blew away their Central American opponents with two goals apiece from John Stones and Harry Kane, as well as a Jesse Lingard strike inside the opening 45 minutes to take a 5-0 lead into the interval. The goal was an example of Kane's precision and clinical acumen.

Substitute Felipe Baloy rewarded them with a consolation goal in the 78th minute, sliding home a free kick that was Panama's first goal in their debut World Cup.

Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku are in second place with four goals each.

"We were ruthless in front of goal", Southgate said.

"It's one to be proud of", he said of the adidas Telstar 18.

Kane didn't have to wait long to add to his tally, converting from the penalty spot in the 22nd after Lingard was brought down by Fidel Escobar.

Panama might have been 6-0 down when they scored against England but that did not stop the fans present from celebrating wildly.

The rout was the first time England have scored more than four goals at a World Cup finals since winning the tournament in 1966.

The 25-year-old IT worker was one of around 50 happy, but slightly bemused fans who had spilled out of the Lord Raglan pub in the City of London following an uncharacteristically dominant display in Russian Federation, leading 5-0 at half-time and ending up 6-1 winners.

"This kid has worked so hard at his game that he's an example to any young player who gets a few knocks and questions whether they can make it".

The academy product had fans anxious for a moment when he took an elbow to the face early on in the match but he made it clear that it didn't affect him at all.

Southgate intends to freshen up his side on Thursday, when leadership of Group G will be determined, but will seek to maintain "squad harmony" when it comes to selection for the game in Kaliningrad.

The next tiebreaker is fair play - i.e. the amount of yellow and red cards accumulated by a team throughout the group stage. There are others who we didn't get into the game.
