At Least 5 Killed When SUV Fleeing Border Patrol Crashes

Footage of the crash showed four bodies on the ground, the charred Chevrolet and several Border Patrol vehicles at the scene, Fox 29 reported.

The vehicle was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour in an apparent attempt to evade Border Patrol agents, Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd told the news outlet. Officials have not released the names of the driver or any of the 13 passengers. Refusing to bow to police commands, the driver of the black SUV, carrying undocumented immigrants, continued to press the pedal to the metal, until the vehicle flipped off a highway in Big Wells, about 130 miles southwest of San Antonio.

The crash is under investigation by the Border Patrol, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and other federal agencies.

Another passenger, also reported to be a US citizen, is under arrest in connection with the possible case of human smuggling. More information coming soon.

It's not an uncommon sight for Boyd, who said Sunday it's very rare that a day goes by that his deputies do not get involved in a chase due to some form of smuggling from the border. The vehicle was traveling around 100 miles per hour, according to Boyd.

Most of these chases are related to drug or human smuggling, Boyd added.

Boyd said the driver of the Suburban was also injured and was flown to a San Antonio hospital.
