Governor tours tornado damage in Wilkes-Barre Twp

"There were initial reports of entrapments with building collapses and debris, but local fire departments helped with removal from those properties", Scarboro said.

"I've been with the National Weather Service for 27 years, mostly in NY and I've never seen damage like this", said Dave Nicosia, with the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service is sending teams out Thursday to assess storm damage in Bradford County. "Nearly everyone's cars in the parking lot were destroyed", the 18-year-old said.

The storm also caused severe damage at the Arena Hub Plaza, a prominent shopping center in eastern Pennsylvania.

Similar photos surfaced Thursday morning from Granville, Franklin and Leroy townships about 90 miles further north of Wilkes-Barre showing collapsed structures and shattered windows.

An emergency alert and tornado warning from the weather service preceded the twister, but those caught in its path were nevertheless stunned by the devastation.

Another of the hardest hit areas, Wilkes-Barre Township in Luzerne County.

First responders removed the guns and ammunition from Dick's Sporting Goods as a safeguard, and pets were also evacuated from the Petco and PetSmart stores for their safety, Smith said.

Red Cross spokesman Dave Skutnik said on Twitter that the injuries weren't serious, but called the damage in the Luzerne County township "horrific". Since 1888, there have been 175 tornadoes in Pennsylvania recorded in June, according to WPMT.

Trees were uprooted, a vehicle was flipped, debris was everywhere and entire buildings were wrecked. He said was working with county and state officials to determine if the storm would qualify for federal disaster aid. As of late Thursday afternoon, the utility reported it still had 85 customers affected in the area, with no estimated fix time.
