Eid to be celebrated in Kerala today

The Saudi Supreme Court announced that the start of Eid-ul-Fitr will be Friday June 15, after reported sightings of the Shawwal moon, Saudi Press Agency reported.

Eid al-Fitr, known as the feast that breaks the fast of Ramadan, is the first and only day of the new month called Shawwal when Muslims are not permitted to fast.

In Kerala, Eid will be celebrated on Friday, June 15 as the moon was sighted in Kozhikode, a top cleric said.

Muslims celebrate Eid Al Fitr for two or three days by visiting families and loved ones.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet on Thursday evening (today), to sight the Shawwal moon. Earlier the Qazis of Mangalore, Udupi and Ullal have declared Friday as the Eid day as the reports of moon sighting is received from nearby areas.

Also, moon was spotted in Saudi Arabia, according to Arab media.

Ramadan is one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith.

In Pakistan, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said that it is unlikely that the Shawal moon will be sighted on Thursday.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Minister of Justice Sultan Al Badi, along with a number of senior officials. The festivities will also begin as the day starts in France, Belgium, Germany and United States.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US Secretary of State Mike Pompei also issued messages with Eid wishes.
