Antoine Griezmann staying at Atletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann staying at Atletico Madrid

Griezmann announced the news at the end of a TV documentary called "La Decision", broadcast on Spanish channel Movistar.

Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann celebrates a goal.

The Catalan giants confirmed in May that were in talks with Atletico for a potential move for the 27-year-old.

Being away on worldwide duty with France at the World Cup was not enough to quell the speculation, made all the worse when the Atletico Madrid forward revealed that he would be announcing his plans in a televised segment later that evening - in a similar manner to LeBron James' infamous "Decision" announcement in 2010.

"They are doing everything they can to keep Atlético growing and so that they can play the Champions League final at home, they are making an effort to bring top players, I feel like I want to stay in".

"I do not have anything clear, if I'm going to leave or I'm going to stay", he said in the show.

Despite being booed by a section of them last month, Atletico fans seem pretty pleased with the news in the wake of the signing of Thomas Lemar and Jose Giminez's new deal.

He is now with the France squad, preparing for the World Cup, as Les Bleus kick off their campaign against Australia on June 16th.

Griezmann made the announcement during a documentary aired on Thursday, with the film produced by Pique's investment company Kosmos.

Eventually, Atletico snapped. A furious statement released by the club said "enough is enough" and condemned Barca's "inappropriate conduct" in their attempts to sign Griezmann.

Griezmann had been continually linked with a move to Catalunya, while he kept a tight silence on the subject throughout France's World Cup preparations.

The La Liga champions will now have to adjust their summer transfer strategy, though, following Griezmann's decision to snub them in favour of remaining at Atletico.
