Senate Leader McConnell Cancels Recess to Approve Trump's Nominees, Pass Spending Bills

The legislation that Corker intends to file would require the president to submit to Congress any tariffs put in place under a process that invokes national security.

Corker and other Republicans are pushing back on Trump's decision late last month to impose steep steel and aluminum on USA allies, a move that analysts said pushed the United States closer to a trade war.

The defense bill will be open for amendments, McConnell said, and "we'll see what happens as it moves across the floor".

"Another summer, another heavy work load, " tweeted Senator Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, as he pushed to confirm nominations.

President Trump's low approval ratings and the swirl of controversy around the White House have Republican strategists anxious about the party's standing headed toward the fall.

The idea being pursued by Corker, Sen. Pat Toomey, who sources say has made clear to Republican leadership that trade language needs to be brought up for an amendment vote during the consideration of defense policy bill.
