Ministry of Environment participates in 'Beat Plastic Pollution' Environment Day

Lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's achievements in the field of environment, he said that the worldwide community believes that India will achieve its pre-2020 or COP21 targets before time. "Together, let us ensure that our future generations live in a clean and green planet, in harmony with nature", he said in a tweet.

The march, organized by the ministry of environment through the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) is part of activities of the 2018 national environment week and World Environment Day due on June 5.

The United Nations warns that 360 million tonnes of plastic is produced each year, and levels are set to nearly double to 619 million tonnes by 2030, with cigarette butts, drinks bottles and caps and food wrappers the most common single-use plastics.

"These companies have drawn a line in the sand, pledging to do their bit to stem the tide of plastic waste and plastic pollution", Sage said.

"Targeted levies and bans - where properly planned and enforced - have been among the most effective strategies to limit overuse of disposable plastic products", the report said.

To celebrate the World Environment Day 2018, Hyundai has kicked off its green initiative 'Beating Plastic Pollution.' Just for today, Hyundai owners can get their cars dry washed, have PUC and emission levels checked for free at workshops spread across India. And one out of five plastic bottles is recycled.

Professor Christopher Gordon, Director of the Institute of Environmental and Sanitation Studies, University of Ghana, has alerted the public that they may unknowingly be consuming tiny particles of plastic called nano plastics, which are harmful to the human body.

Plastic litters beaches, blocks drains and harms wildlife, with an estimated 100,000 marine animals killed each year, as well as turning up in food and is found in 90% of bottled water.

While acknowledging that combating plastic waste is different for every country, the United Nations report suggested 10 universal steps that policymakers can follow, including use of more eco-friendly alternatives to plastics and the promotion of reusable products.

The objective of celebrating world environment day is to bring worldwide focus on importance of environment and to stimulate attention and actions for improving the environment.

Given the challenges plastic pose, we need to look at what all we can do to beat the plastic. We have launched the Namami Gange initiative.

He also reiterated India's commitment to sustainable development. Currently, all plastic bags used in Rwanda are biodegradable. "If present trends continue, by 2050", Guterres warned, "our oceans will have more plastic than fish".
