It was her first trip to the competition, and she said she was taking it "one word at a time", focusing on each one she was assigned to spell.

How would you do in the competition?

Simone Kaplan, a sixth-grader from St. Bonaventure Catholic School in Davie, is among 16 spellers still alive in the Scripps National Spelling Bee heading into the primetime finals that air live on ESPN from the Washington area starting at 8:30 p.m.

The 515 entrants in this year's three-day competition included 23 Ohioans.

The final two spellers, Naysa Modi, 12, from Frisco, Texas, left, and Karthik Nemmani, 14, from McKinney, Texas, wait to spell their words during the evening finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Oxon Hill, Md., Thursday, May 31, 2018. His winning word was "koinonia", which means Christian fellowship or communion.

The victor will receive $40,000, a trophy from the Scripps Bee, $25,000 cash prize, a complete reference library from Merriam-Webster, trips to NY and Hollywood for a media tour and a pizza party for their school.

Also new this year: Breaks for the voice of the Scripps Bee, Jacques Bailly - or "Dr. Bailly" to numerous spellers. And several had appeared at the national bee in previous years. She first competed in the bee as a cherubic 9-year-old.

"She was just as graceful as she could be", bee program manager Corrie Loeffler said.

Naysa was making her fourth appearance at nationals and had a loud cheering section.

Karthik, for his part, took no extra satisfaction in vanquishing a familiar foe. "I wouldn't say I expected it. We were against the dictionary".
