Grinning Harvey Weinstein on one million dollar bail after rape charge

Harvey Weinstein arrives at the first precinct while turning himself to authorities following allegations of sexual misconduct, Friday, May 25, 2018, in NY. Al Franken, chef Mario Batali, casino magnate Steve Wynn and, most recently, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

Harvey Weinstein attends a pre-BAFTA party hosted by Charles Finch and Chanel at Annabel's on February 11, 2017, in London.

Weinstein's lawyers have said allegations that he forced himself on women were false.

A grand jury has been hearing evidence in the case for weeks following a months-long inquiry by NY police into allegations of assaults by Weinstein.

While the industry he once called home has held him accountable for the terrible things he did to women, the charges being filed against Weinstein by the New York City District Attorney are necessary.

There was no immediate public reaction from other stars who have spoken of being harassed by Weinstein, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd and Salma Hayek.

Weinstein was clutching two books, Something Wonderful: Rodgers And Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution, by Todd S Purdum, and Richard Schickel's biography of producer, director and writer Elia Kazan. "He'll put up a million dollars in cash and agree to wear a monitoring device, according to law enforcement officials".

Evans' allegations added to those of dozens of other women, who claimed that Weinstein had engaged in a vast range of sexual misconduct dating back almost four decades, ranging from inappropriate touching to incidents of rape.

"We can't go backward", she said. The federal investigation followed an early probe carried out in Manhattan regarding whether or not Weinstein had engaged in financial fraud regarding his fund-raising tactics with the amfAR Organization.

The other charge relates to a woman who has not been identified and who may choose to remain anonymous.

Evans, now a marketing consultant, told The New Yorker that Weinstein approached her in a club in 2004 and that an assistant subsequently set up a daytime meeting at the Miramax office in Tribeca.

The woman, Lucia Evans, (LOO'-sha) was among the first to speak out about the film producer.

Lawyers for the film producer have said all allegations that he forced himself on women were "entirely without merit". For a long time, no one believed her, she said.

Though she has the support of fashion's reigning queen, Anna Wintour, (who blessed the brand's return to the Met Gala earlier this month, where Scarlett Johansson stepped out in a burgundy gown by the fashion hosue) as well as CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg, some were wary about her complicity in Weinstein's affairs.

She didn't report the incident to police at the time, telling The New Yorker's Ronan Farrow that she blamed herself for not fighting back. One official said it's likely the case also will include at least one other victim who has not come forward publicly.

Scores of women have come to fore and accused the 66-year-old of a wide array of misconduct, which ranges from harassment to rape, over decades.

Weinstein has repeatedly said he didn't have nonconsensual sex with anyone.
