Zidane had raised eyebrows on Thursday after calling for a previously unannounced press conference at 11.00 GMT just days after winning the Champions League for the third year in a row.

In January this year, Zidane confirmed he signed a contract extension at Real to keep him at the club until 2020 but just a month later said "when I feel there is nothing more to give, I'll walk away".

The former France worldwide, a Champions League victor with Real in 2002 also, announced his decision at a hastily-arranged press conference with president Florentino Perez on Thursday afternoon.

In addition to the three European titles, Zidane also won six other titles with the club, including one league crown. "I had to do this for everyone", he said. For me and for everybody, I think the moment to change has arrived.

"I will be close to this club for the rest of my life".

Pérez added: "This was a totally unexpected decision, Zidane informed me of his choice yesterday".

"This side should carry on winning and needs a change for this".

Club president Florentino Perez said as he opened the news conference: "It is a sad day, for me, for the club, the players, everyone at this club". They have always respected what I've done, even when I wasn't playing well.

Zidane announced his decision in Madrid on Thursday morning. "I don't want this to be a goodbye but a 'see you soon".

You never stop learning: Zinedine Zidane, the man famous for the least graceful exit in the history of the game, has today had one of the great mic drops.

"I want to thank Zizou for his dedication to the job, his passion and his affection". I'm not looking for another team. "I wanted him to be next to me forever".
