Italian PM-designate fails to form coalition government, resigns

Italian Prime Minister-Designate Giuseppe Conte couldn't form a new government, Ugo Zampetti, an official at the president's office, said Sunday, Sputnik reported.

The political novice and 5-Star supporter selected by Di Maio and Salvini to be premier told reporters at the palace he had tried his best but didn't succeed, four days after Mattarella formally gave him a mandate to try to form the government on behalf of the populists.

Mattarella ultimately refused to back the so-called "euroskeptic" for the economy portfolio.

Italy's would-be coalition parties turned up the pressure on President Sergio Mattarella on Saturday to endorse their eurosceptic pick as economy minister, saying the only other option may be a new election.

The 81-year-old billionaire former prime minister released a statement on Sunday in which he praised Mattarella's efforts to "safeguard this country's families and businesses".

Conte, a little-known law professor with no political experience, took his list of ministers to President Sergio Mattarella in a bid to end a two-month political stalemate.

"The incredible thing is that President Mattarella has not only stopped this government, but is trying to force the government that is the expression of his own will", Stefano said.

The chances of the economist gaining approval for any technocrat government are slim, as Five Star and the League boil with anger at their own coalition stumbling on the home straight.

He was director of the IMF's fiscal affairs department from 2008 to 2013 and became known as "Mr Scissors" for making cuts to public spending in Italy while charged with the revision of public spending by Enrico Letta's short-lived centre-left government.

Mattarella's claims that Savona is a danger to Italy's stay in the eurozone lack any ground, Stefano argued, since Savona's current stance is that Italy can assert its place in European economics without necessarily abandoning the euro.

Italy's anti-establishment 5-Star Movement is considering campaigning together with the far-right League if the nation goes back to the polls, a 5-star source said on Monday.

Di Maio called in to a late night talk show and said he would ask parliament to charge the president with high treason.

It is not the first time that an Italian president has refused to appoint a minister supported by the majority of lawmakers - it has happened at least three times before, most notoriously with Silvio Berlusconi.
