Guatemala opens embassy in Jerusalem, two days after U.S. move

In anticipation of the inauguration of the Guatemalan Embassy in Jerusalem's Malcha Technology Park on May 16, the city illuminated the Old City walls with flags of Guatemala, Israel and the United States along with a message thanking President Jimmy Morales Cabrera of Guatemala.

The bloodshed drew calls for restraint from some countries, including France and Britain, and stronger criticism from others, with regional power Turkey calling it "a massacre".

Around 150 people attended the ceremony including U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, businessman Sheldon Adelson, Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat along with several Guatemalan politicians.

In December, President Donald Trump announced he would move the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and that he would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the country. President Reuven Rivlin also met with Morales.

There was barely any mention of the Gaza violence at Monday's lavish inauguration ceremony for the new embassy, an upgraded consular building located just 80 kilometers away.

"This is the beginning of something extraordinary, or I would say, the re-beginning of something extraordinary, which is the relationship between Guatemala and Israel", he said. That move caused some tension because both Israel and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital.

Netanyahu profusely praised the Central American nation for making the move and noted it came only two days after the United States opened its embassy.

"This is a sovereign decision and as a sovereign decision, we recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel".

Israel regards all of the city, including the eastern sector it captured in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed in a move that is not recognized internationally, as its "eternal and indivisible capital".

The Israeli foreign ministry has said Paraguay is planning to move by the end of the month, according to Reuters.

The Israeli premier said he would visit Guatemala on his next visit to Latin America.

After President Trump's announcement past year, the Czech Republic has said that Jerusalem is the "capital of the State of Israel, in its 1967 borders".

There have also been reports of support for a move from sections of the government in Romania.

Before a large-scale withdrawal of foreign embassies in 1980, Jerusalem hosted about a dozen embassies.
