First Lady Melania Treated for Benign Kidney, Surgery Successful

Stephanie Grisham, communication director for Melania Trump, said the "procedure was successful and there were no complications".

Mrs. Trump, who has been gradually raising her profile as first lady, recently hosted her first state dinner and launched a public awareness campaign to help children.

President Donald Trump headed to Walter Reed, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Monday afternoon to visit his wife.

In embolization, doctors insert a catheter as part of a procedure to purposely block a blood vessel and cut off the blood supply to the affected area.

Trump said the first lady is "doing really well" and that he expected her back at the White House before the end of the week.

A Slovenia-born former model, Melania married Trump in 2005. Trump also joked that his 48-year-old wife should be the one visiting him in the hospital and not the other way around, a senator said.

Mrs. Trump's spokeswoman had said the first lady was likely to remain hospitalized for "the duration of the week". Will be leaving hospital in two or three days.

The Trumps and their marriage have been under scrutiny in recent months after revelations that a porn actress was paid $130,000 in hush money to keep quiet about claims she had sex with Trump in 2006.

Last week, Trump gave a speech in the Rose Garden to announce a new campaign that she's calling "Be Best".
