Cano, Healy homers lead Mariners to 9-5 win, doubleheader split

DETROIT (AP) - Robinson Cano hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, and the Seattle Mariners slugged their way to a 9-5 victory over Detroit on Saturday night, salvaging a split of their doubleheader with the Tigers.

Update, 2:58 PM ET: Cano fractured the fifth metacarpal in his right hand, per Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times.

He was attended to by a trainer and left the game, replaced in the lineup by Andrew Romine.

Castellanos, 26, is hitting.326 with three home runs and 23 RBIs on the season.

The Mariners are now tied 2-2 with the Tigers in the top of the fifth. Boyd did not record a start against the Mariners in 2017. He hit a three-run home run Saturday in the second game of the doubleheader against the Tigers.

Cano went more than 10 years between stints on the disabled list when the Mariners placed him on the 10-day DL because of a strained right quad muscle last May.

"It needed to be challenged after the fact when I saw it", said bench coach Manny Acta, who was filling in for Scott Servais as Seattle's manager. Two innings earlier, he got the Tigers' first hit off James Paxton, ensuring the Mariners starter wouldn't be throwing another no-hitter on Sunday.

Greiner opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth. "We had a miscommunication over the phone about it and I'm not going to point fingers". Over his last eight appearances, he's allowed just one walk and one hit (a single) in 8 innings, striking out seven. But Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias made a brilliant play on Ryon Healy's grounder up the middle, starting a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and preserve a 2-2 tie. Wade LeBlanc (0-0) starts for the Mariners against Jake Odorizzi (3-2). The Mariners have the offensive edge in this one and they have a big edge on the mound with Paxton over Hardy, who is making his first Major League Baseball start after 167 games out of the pen in his career.
