'It Worked': Sheriff's Office Touts Fast Response To School Shooting

The school is on lockdown, students were told to shelter in place and parents were told to stay away from the area.

"Deputies responded immediately to Palmdale shooting, arrest made, weapon found, active investigation underway".

McDonnell said the 14-year-old suspect had fired multiple gunshots in a courtyard but did not elaborate on whether the teen was aiming for anyone in particular.

Faculty also provided surveillance video of the suspect arriving and leaving the school, which "assisted in the quick apprehension" of the suspect, McDonnell said.

The suspect told his father that he shot his gun through the air, McDonnell said.

The rifle apparently used in the attack was recovered in an open field west of the school, McDonnell said.

The Los Angeles County sheriff's department said on Twitter Friday morning that the school has been searched and cleared.

Authorities said the shooting appeared to be random but have not revealed the motive. The teen was in her Reserve Officers' Training Corps class, and said students were putting sofas and desks in front of the classroom door and windows to barricade themselves inside, Luke said. "A bunch of kids started running out to me, towards me, with very panicked looks on their faces", Alexander said. There was one shot.

"I was supposed to be going to school earlier than I was, but was late", she said.

Harris says the school is safe but remains on lockdown as officials worked to reunite students with their parents. "And I'm locked up in one of the buildings now'".

George said he'd seen the teen on campus, but didn't know him.

Sheriff's deputies also received a call reporting shots fired in the vicinity of Manzanita Elementary School about 7 miles (11 kilometers) away from Highland High School.

Highland High students were evacuated and brought to the Antelope Valley Mall.

She says there's no information about that caller and no confirmation of the report. "Alexander, turn around, turn around, there's an active shooter.' And I didn't really have time to react to that because nearly immediately after that I heard one single gunshot very loud and very close by".

Friday's incident comes during a time when gun control and school safety has been a national hot topic since the Parkland shooting on February 14.
