The Location Of The US-North Korea Summit Is Reportedly Set

"I really think he wants to do something", the president said.

The three boarded under their own steam, when most of the US delegation had already got on the plane.

The agonizing wait is over for the families of three American detainees, including the family of university professor Tony Kim.

Still, he acknowledged, "even the sceptics, who look at the history of the negotiations with North Korea, look upon this as an opening for a breakthrough ..."

The US president had earlier floated the idea of holding the meeting in the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, which separates North and South Korea. The former detainees appeared joyous as they threw up peace signs and shook hands with the President at the top of the stairs, before greeting Vice President Pence and Secretary Pompeo on the tarmac.

The freed prisoners appeared exhausted but in excellent spirits, flashing peace signs and waving their arms as they emerged from the aircraft. "We have a chance at something very great for the world". They later gave the president a round of applause. "This is what people have been waiting for a long time".

After Trump's remarks, the three men boarded a bus for Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where they are to be evaluated and receive medical treatment before being reunited with their families.

Mr Trump, who had cautioned that he was prepared to walk away from the summit if progress was not being made and that any deal would have to include North Korea's denuclearisation, said on their arrival that he believed Mr Kim wanted to bring North Korea "into the real world" and had high hopes for their planned meeting.

The North Korean leader also welcomed plans for the summit earlier Thursday in a report on the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

Moon is scheduled to visit the White House on May 22 to debrief Trump on his own meeting with Kim and discuss strategy ahead of Trump's summit.

"We are in uncharted waters", he said. By definition, when a summit fails, you run out of diplomacy, diplomatic options.

As for the venue, why Singapore?

It will mark the first ever meeting between a sitting U.S. president and North Korean leader.

Located at the southern tip of Malaysia, the prosperous city state is a regional Southeast Asia hub whose free enterprise philosophy welcomes trading partners from everywhere.

Spokesman Yoon Young-chan also called upon the North to release six South Koreans it has in prison. He is a native of China but a naturalized USA citizen.

Schumer slammed Trump's comments in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday morning.

Shortly after they touched down in Alaska, the department released a statement from the freed men. Trump tweeted to his 51.7 million followers on Thursday.

"But as they came down the stairs, the joy on their faces, their appreciation for the people of the United States, for their countrymen, for the president and, frankly, their gratitude to God was deeply moving", Pence said of their return to American soil.

But the swiftness in the development of events concerning North Korea has analysts anticipating potentially historic outcomes. Prior to being arrested in North Korea, he and his wife had been living in China, where they were also doing missionary work.

Who attended the meeting other than Kim and Pompeo was not mentioned. And more than two decades and multiple provocative weapons tests after the last accord, the threat from North Korea has only grown.
