Trump to Skip US Embassy Opening in Jerusalem

The Trump family will be represented by the president's daughter and son-in-law.

In December, US President Donald Trump announced that he would transfer his embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and that Jerusalem was the capital of Israel, causing worldwide criticism and Palestinian protests. The leaders of the OIC member states condemned Trump's decision. Trump ordered the move past year, fulfilling a key campaign promise but drawing condemnation from many US allies, who say the move makes it more hard to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

"Those who will attend the ceremony will send a signal that they are encouraging the trampling of global legitimacy and the inherent rights of the Palestinian people", Erekat said as quoted in the statement.

Israel put up the first "U.S. Embassy" road signs in its capital of Jerusalem Monday morning, weeks after President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would move its embassy from Tel Aviv and recognize Israel's capital.

Israel captured East Jerusalem from Jordanian control in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in a move not recognised internationally.

Still, local residents are excited about the new move. Israel has made repeated offers of a two-state solution, once even offering to internationalize Jerusalem, but the Palestinians rejected them.

Earlier, US Embassy road signs were erected in Jerusalem on Monday a week before Washington was due to relocate its mission, a move that has infuriated the Arab and Muslim worlds. "Jerusalem is our capital", she said.

In March, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said that his country would relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 16, two days after the United States move.

If Trump attended the ceremony, it might have amplified protests that are expected to break out around the opening.
