Facebook also might unveil additional changes.

This is an important moment.

But member of Parliament Damian Collins, who is chair of the digital, culture, media and sport select committee, wrote in a letter to Facebook's United Kingdom head of public policy that Schroepfer's testimony "lacked numerous important details that we need". Now you're going to be able to bring your friends together and you can laugh together and you can cry together.

At the very least, Spaces is more successful than failed Facebook projects like Slingshot (its Snapchat competitor) and its smartphone the First - at least for now.

As chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, Collins has repeatedly accused Facebook execs of understating the risk of their users' data being grabbed, stored and used without their consent.

Zuckerberg also announced a number of other upcoming features and updates for Facebook and Instagram at the annual conference Tuesday.

Tech companies are under intense scrutiny about how they protect customer data after Facebook was embroiled in a huge scandal where millions of users' data were improperly accessed by a political consultancy. As per the company's official blog post, now you'll also be able to see which apps and websites are sending data to Facebook.

But this was not just an apology tour. Facebook is going to get into the dating game.

"The hardest decision that I made this year wasn't to invest so much in safety and security-that decision was easy", Zuckerberg said.

To get back in the good graces of the developers, Zuckerberg ended his presentation with the news that Oculus Go was shipping today. And he came alive showing off the cool stuff Facebook is building, including a Facebook dating tool and the Oculus Go virtual-reality headset.

The dating profile can be created separate from an individual's existing Facebook profile - and the user's friends won't be able to see it, the company said in a statement detailing the new feature. Zuckerberg said WhatsApp will also be getting a group video-calling feature soon. Yet another feature called "Watch Party" will let users gather to watch video together, Zuckerberg said - like "your friend testifying before Congress".

"Judging by the response in the audience, there was a lot of positive sentiment toward what he said".

When Zuckerberg then appeared at the US Congress, it seemed that half the world stopped what they were doing to watch the pale-faced, cushion-enhanced CEO answers questions.

Zuckerberg said Facebook was building the dating service with an emphasis on privacy, a sensitive subject for people who use online dating and for Facebook as the company reels from a scandal over its handling of personal information.
