Rangers dismiss Murty, paving the way for Steven Gerrard

Rangers dismiss Murty, paving the way for Steven Gerrard

There has been widespread speculation in the British media that the club is in talks with former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who has been a youth coach at his former club since retiring from the LA Galaxy in 2016.

"Yeah there is (an interest), as I said I've held positive talks with them".

And Rodgers is adamant Murty has been treated "discourteously" by Rangers after he stepped up to the top job for a second time following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha and the failure to land Aberdeen's Derek McInnes.

The Scottish side lost 5-0 to Celtic on Sunday at Parkhead and had to watch their bitter rivals lift their seventh consecutive league title.

The 37-year-old would become the long-term successor at Ibrox to Graeme Murty, who was sacked earlier on Tuesday.

Murty was informed of Rangers' decision in a meeting with managing director Stewart Robertson at Ibrox.

The 43-year-old was handed the job in December until the end of the campaign following the dismissal of Pedro Caixinha.

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard is expected to be announced as the next manager of Rangers this week - with it unclear whether former Under-20s coach Murty will remain in place for the final three games of the season.

Nicholl, 61, will take the lead role in trying to lead the Ibrox squad through a testing trio of matches.

And Gerrard is likely to press the Rangers board over the finances available to him should he take over a club who are third in the Premiership and level on points with fourth-placed Hibernian.

Rangers added that Murty "will take some time to consider his options, which include returning to his role at the Rangers Academy".

"There's truth in the rumours", Gerrard said on TV in the UK. I think he would be terrific for Rangers just at this stage because unquestionably it's the worst side that has ever, ever played for Rangers at this minute.
