'Very good chance' of a US-China trade deal

During a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House, Trump stressed his tough stance on reducing the USA trade deficit with China.

Trump's remarks came after Mnuchin said on Saturday that he was considering a trip to China but was "not going to make any comment on timing, nor do I have anything confirmed".

"It is important that as a global community we keep trade open and ensure that we work within the multilateral system. And that'll be good". If the two sides can't reach agreement, he said, proposed US tariffs on billions of dollars in Chinese goods will take effect as planned.

Both countries have proposed tariffs on the other, after the Trump administration's "Section 301" investigation into China's business practices.

Beijing has responded by immediately slapping duties on key United States agricultural exports, in measures meant to target the American president's support base - and could do likewise for the sensitive U.S. soybean industry.

And on Tuesday Trump described his relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping as "excellent".

"They trade with us", the president said.

US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has expressed interest in visiting Beijing for further trade negotiations, an announcement that was welcomed by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
